NIMBUS

Project Info

Background

Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts) manages around 28 km of transshipment quays and 12 km of sheet piling at 15 port locations. These infrastructures are subject to considerable wear and tear due to corrosion, which severely impairs their service life. Many of the sheet piles do not reach their planned service life of 50 to 80 years, which leads to increased costs and risks.

Project objective

NIMBUS aims to extend the service life of sheet piling in German seaports. Cost-efficient and resource-saving measures are intended to strengthen the competitiveness of the German port industry and minimize operational failures and safety risks. As part of the project, general and specific damage mechanisms are to be analyzed in order to be able to determine more precise corrosion rates and the remaining service life of sheet piling. This will enable better planning and prioritization of repair measures. In addition, innovative coating and repair processes are being developed and tested at NPorts Port of Emden to improve corrosion protection and extend the service life of sheet piling.

With NIMBUS, NPorts is helping to ensure the long-term usability and safety of port infrastructure while at the same time achieving economic and environmental benefits.
